FROM CHEAT TO STEVIE WONDER

- LAWRENCE BOOTH

5 STEVE SMITH is the fifth Australian to score two hundreds in an Ashes Test. The other four are Matthew Hayden (197 and 103 at Brisbane in 2002), Steve Waugh (108 and 116 at Old Trafford in 1997), Arthur Morris (122 and 124 not out at Adelaide in 1947), and Warren Bardsley (136 and 130 at the Oval in 1909). Three Englishmen have achieved the feat: Herbert Sutcliffe, Wally Hammond and Denis Compton. 6 SMITH’S last 10 Ashes innings have produced six hundreds and an amazing total of 1,116 runs at an average of 139. That includes scores of 141 not out, 142, 143 and 144 — not to mention a stunning careerbest 239 at Perth in December 2017. 10 HIS tally of 10 Ashes centuries is bettered only by Don Bradman, who made 19, and Jack Hobbs, who made 12. Steve Waugh, who is acting as a mentor to the Australia squad in this series, also made 10. 71 SINCE scoring his first Test hundred, at the Oval in 2013, Smith averages 71 for Australia. That hundred was the first of 25 in 97 innings — an astonishing ratio. 286 SMITH’S tally in this Test of is a personal best, beating the 273 he managed at Lord’s in 2015, with scores of 215 and 58.
