Warnock’s worry but Eze does it for QPR

- By AMITAI WINEHOUSE

NEVER write off Neil Warnock in the Championship, but there was an early sign that he might not have the magic touch this season.

CARDIFF went down 3-2 at Wigan. That’s the first time Warnock has lost on the opening day of a second-tier campaign since 2002-03. ‘Welcome to the Championship,’ he said. ‘It was nothing more than I was expecting.’ On the other hand, if you want to end a 32-year-long drought, sometimes Eze does it. Specifically, Eberechi Eze. The 21-year-old forward scored a fine goal at Stoke to give manager Mark Warburton a winning start to life with QPR. It is the first time they have won their first league match away from home since 1987. After a chaotic summer, SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY probably did not expect to get a 3-1 win at READING. Lee Bullen (below), in his third caretaker spell as manager, has got the squad playing for him and he now holds a 44.4 per cent win record across his three temporary periods in charge. He’s now thrown his hat in the ring for the post permanently. ‘I feel I’m ready for it,’ he said. Ben Purrington seems to have decided goalscoring is for him, after his winner in last season’s play-off final. The defender made it two in two as he scored again as CHARLTON won 2-1 at

BLACKBURN. Before that, Purrington had not scored in any of his 119 league appearances. One of the surprises of the summer window is that HULL have managed to keep hold of Kamil Grosicki. The Pole showed his value as he struck against SWANSEA. It is just a shame that his 17th goal contribution of 2019 — the third highest in the Championship — came in a 2-1 loss.
