ENGLAND RATINGS

- LAWRENCE BOOTH

RORY BURNS 8 His first-innings 133 was the knock English cricket has been waiting for: a gutsy ton from an opener not called Alastair Cook. Not always pretty, and occasionally lucky — but frankly, who cares? JASON ROY 4 A novice at red-ball opening, and it showed, especially in yesterday’s charge at Lyon. But England knew what they were getting — and Roy has the talent to succeed. JOE ROOT 7 Not for the first time, England’s best batsman paled in comparison with Australia’s best. But, on his return to No 3, Root did manage an old-style Test fifty. Captaincy hopelessly hampered by Anderson’s injury. JOE DENLY 4 Hard to see how he justifies being England’s No 4 — a spot occupied by some all-time greats. Made 18 and 10 (wasting a review), and sent down 16 wicketless overs for 79. BEN STOKES 6 Fought like a maniac, as ever, but lacked support. Followed a battling first-innings 50 with some wholehearted second-innings bowling, but Anderson’s injury promoted him to third seamer, which is a place too high. JOS BUTTLER 3 Due a quiet Test, though England will be unnerved by how easily Pat Cummins worked him out. A smart catch at short leg to dismiss Siddle on the first day, but dropped Khawaja on the third. JONNY BAIRSTOW 2 One of the World Cup stars yet to re-adjust to Test cricket. His four innings since are 0 and 0 against Ireland, and 8 and 6 against Australia. MOEEN ALI 2 Looks broken, just as he did during the 2017-18 Ashes. He has fallen to Lyon in nine of his last 11 innings against Australia and had match figures of three for 172, to Lyon’s nine for 161. CHRIS WOAKES 7 All over Australia’s middle order in the first innings, then showed Ali and Bairstow how to bat in both innings. But he was anonymous with the ball in the second, mainly because Root didn’t give him a chance. STUART BROAD 7 Bowled beautifully in the first innings to move to 450 Test wickets and 100 in the Ashes, but missed his old mucker Jimmy Anderson as Steve Smith got to work. Batted with gumption on Saturday. JIMMY ANDERSON 5 Bowled four tidy overs, then didn’t reappear, except with the bat. But what could England do if their leading Test wicket-taker insisted he was fit to play? TOTAL 55/110
