My one proviso is the conditions. If Lord’s is a greentop like it was against Ireland, I’d pick Moeen Ali over Jack Leach, because he’s a better all-round cricketer — even if he’s lacking any confidence with bat or ball at the moment. I’M not going to panic after one Test. Jimmy Anderson is unfit so Jofra Archer comes in as long as he is truly 100 per cent and comes through his second-team game with Sussex successfully. Otherwise, it has to be Olly Stone for the extra pace. Other than that it’s a case of backing the players and telling them to get us out of this mess. I’vE been critical of Jason Roy’s dismissal yesterday but he has to be given time to get it right and I can’t see a way in for Ben Foakes, who I would have picked at the start of the series. Moeen Ali has to go for his own good, temporarily, and Joe Denly has to go for good. I’m afraid he is not quite up to it at this level and England have no time to waste. ARChER for Anderson is obvious, and Moeen Ali has to take a breather, for his own good. I also think Sam Curran is a better all-round bet than Joe Denly, who feels like a confused selection right now, offering neither middle- order runs nor any kind of penetration with his leg-spin.
