SIX TO WATCH
ERIN CUTHBERT CHELSEA
CUTHBERT (left) led Scotland to their first World Cup finals this summer and, despite their dramatic exit from the competition, the 21-year-old forward attracted global attention. She scores spectacular goals from distance and her half-volley against Lyon in the Champions League semi-final last season was voted goal of the competition.
JACKIE GROENEN MANCHESTER UNITED
THE central midfielder, who scored the goal that fired the Netherlands into this year’s World Cup final, was Casey Stoney’s first major signing this summer and could prove to be one of the smartest pieces of business in this transfer window.
VIVIANNE MIEDEMA ARSENAL
AFTER becoming the WSL’s top scorer last season, netting 22 goals in 20 games, the prolific Dutch forward became her country’s all-time top scorer this summer. Miedema (right) is only 23 but already has three career league titles to her name, plus a winner’s medal from Euro 2017.
JORDAN NOBBS ARSENAL
ENGLAND’S vice-captain scored from her first shot in a pre-season win over Spurs last month after being out for nine months with a ruptured ACL. She helped Arsenal retain the WSL title in 2012 and, having won 12 trophies in nine years there, the midfielder is crucial to their title defence again.
MELISSA LAWLEY LIVERPOOL
SECURING the services of Lawley is a statement of intent by Liverpool. In two and a half years at Manchester City, the 25-year-old midfielder won two FA Cups, a Continental Cup and reached the Champions League semi-finals. After being called up by England this month, Lawley will have her sights on becoming a regular in Phil Neville’s side.
MAEVA CLEMARON EVERTON
SCHOOLED for a year in Lyon’s academy, the France midfielder made the switch to Merseyside this summer from part-time club FC Fleury.
