STEVEN SESSEGNON

-

CLUB: Fulham AGE: 19 POSITION: Full back VALUE: £2m WHAT HAS HE GOT? THE twin brother of Tottenham’s Ryan has won a spot in the Fulham defence, having joined from schoolboy football. As a full back, he is well-built, strong and around 5ft 9in. Very much right-footed, he has played many academy games as a centre half but he may lack the height for that position. In the game I saw, he got caught out at right back, pushing forward when a pass went astray in midfield. His opponent took advantage to race away and score with a cross-shot. Sessegnon (below) had been the victim of his own adventure. As a young player, he will make mistakes but the most important thing is how he reacts. Here, he was more than positive. Positioning himself well for a right to left crossfield ball, he strode forward confidently to intercept and head clear. In the following moments he cleared an awkward situation with a swing of his left boot, not worrying if the ball landed in Row Z. He then headed away well under pressure but twice late on he looked insecure as he tried to win the ball early in the air against taller opponents. His team play a passing game and as such he has the opportunity to break forward when the opposition are defending with a narrow block. His pace seems adequate but what I really liked was his body position when confronting an opponent who has possession — eyes on the ball, forcing the player inside and into the path of the covering midfield. I also liked how he broke forward once on the inside rather than the overlap. The element of surprise almost resulted in a goal.

WHAT DOES HE NEED?

AS a full back, he must sometimes hold his run rather than always going forward in search of a one-two. He can be slightly impetuous at times but his enthusiasm shines through. It looks clear that Fulham’s coaching staff feel the time has come to give him his head and I am sure he will repay their faith.
