Beware complacency over Comrade Corbyn
OVER the years, this newspaper has rarely seen eye-to- eye with Labour’s queen of sanctimony Harriet Harman.
Not least, her radical feminist worldview and baleful obsession with political correctness that so influenced her party’s war on marriage and traditional families.
But Labour runs through her, like a seaside resort runs through a stick of rock. That is indisputable.
Unless, of course, you are one of Jeremy Corbyn’s Marxist goons. Hard- Left extremists are threatening to eject her from her seat – for political impurity.
As Labour embarks on its annual rally tomorrow, the public should bear in mind this menacing shadow.
Four years ago, Mr Corbyn was greeted Messiah-like by adoring activists as he gave his first conference speech after his improbable leadership victory.
Now, a poll shows the bearded old classwarrior is the most unpopular Opposition leader in history. He may run scared of an election. But complacency is lethal.
In Brighton, Labour will promise GP appointments within 48 hours. And 16year- olds will be offered the vote – to mobilise a youth army that could swing dozens of marginals.
To some, these populist policies hold allure. But they must be paid for. And they mask the perils of propelling Mr Corbyn into No 10. He would preside over an economically illiterate neo-socialist government.
And for proof of the obnoxious depths to which the party has plunged, look who isn’t there: Moderate MPs hounded out for condemning Labour’s anti-Semitic sewer.
An election is on the horizon. Labour candidates will come bearing gifts. But that risks a leader who will bankrupt Britain, smash the Union and leave us defenceless in the face of our enemies.
