WHAT TO WEAR THIS WEEKEND

THE BOILERSUIT

- by Dinah van Tulleken STYLE EDITOR

GO ON, BE BRAVE

WHEN they first appeared on the catwalk I swore the only time you’d ever see me in one would be if I was replacing the exhaust pipe on my car (which is to say never, I don’t drive). But fast forward a couple of years and my denim overalls are the hardest working item in my wardrobe.

YOUR MOST PRACTICAL ITEM OF CLOTHING

THE utility boiler is the jumpsuit’s more slouchy, more durable, and oh so comfortable cousin. They were popular for summer, but we’re going to be seeing a whole lot more of them come winter with the rise of the utility trend. It’s a one-stop when you’re getting dressed, giving you a top and trousers in one.

IF MONEY IS NO OBJECT

GUCCI has some fantastic offerings including a shimmering black belted moiré design. Victoria Beckham has a fabulous bright red cotton-brill. Then there’s Alexa Chung’s navy denim suit with multiple zipped, patched pockets. But let’s be honest, money is always an object. So the one I am wearing here — l.F. Markey at label Mix design, £119 — with its fabulous wide legs, is a fraction of the price. Chic boilersuit seems like an oxymoron, but this is it!

YES, YOU CAN DRESS IT UP

IT’S taken me a long time to feel brave enough to wear one anywhere other than the local park, with only my toddler to judge me, but these days I’m happy to dress mine up for an evening out and team with a blazer to the office. You might feel bonkers at first but I promise after the first wear you’ll forget all about it. Prepare to take a bit of ribbing. My husband can’t resist singing, ‘You can’t get better than a Kwik Fit fitter…’ when I’m wearing mine. Hilarious.
