FIJI WARNING TO WALES

- By ROB WILDMAN

FIJI are ready for Wales on Wednesday after smashing Georgia in a seven-try rout. Semi Radradra was in sensational form, scoring twice and setting up three others as Fiji ran in six tries in the second half. They struggled before the break and were just 7-3 up through Waisea Nayacalevu’s try. But Frank Lomani, Josua Tuisova, Semi Kunatani and Api Ratuniyarawa all crossed to add to Radradra’s double as Fiji ran riot. After his team had bowed to the crowd and sung a hymn on the field, coach John McKee fired a warning to the Welsh, who Fiji beat at the 2007 World Cup to make the quarter-finals. ‘We believe we can have a shot at them,’ he said. ‘It will be a very different game from this but if we take our chances it’ll be game on. ‘Wales are a dangerous team. They are coming out of a strong Six Nations, are good in attack and defence, and I think they are showing a bit more in attack at this World Cup. But we are a good team as well.’ Georgia were not at the races, scoring only through a Soso Matiashvili penalty and a converted Mamuka Gorgodze try. Scrum coach Graham Rowntree said: ‘We are better than that. Fiji grew with confidence and strength as the game went on. They’ve got the skill level to trouble Wales. It depends on their motivation.’

SHERBORNE could be an emerging force in this season’s SOCS Daily Mail Schools Trophy. The Dorset team are unbeaten and have conceded only one try in wins over Bishop Wordsworth’s, Radley and Marlborough. Captain Tom Carr-Smith scored two tries in the 44-5 win over Marlborough in this merit-table based competition staged over the autumn term and sponsored by SOCS, the school management system. Among Sherborne’s forthcoming opponents are South West rivals Millfield and Clifton College. These powerful teams clashed last week in the annual match staged in memory of Clifton pupil Ryan Bresnahan who died in 2010 from meningitis. Clifton won 29-0, helped by two players who are making their mark. Fly-half Harry Ascheri has made his debut for Bristol in the Premiership Cup while back-row Harry Taylor was in the England Under 18 squad who went to South Africa in August.
