HOTWHAT’S NOTWHAT’S
HOT KATARINA JOHNSON-THOMPSON
DINA ASHER-SMITH has taken the limelight for brilliant gold and silver medals but the finest performance in the World Championships was delivered by heptathlete Johnson-Thompson. After disappointment at the Rio Olympics and two previous World Championships, most athletes wouldn’t be able to walk seven paces in an arena, let alone crush an Olympic champion and break a national record.
ANDY MURRAY
PIECE by piece, he is putting himself back together. Yesterday, five weeks after playing a Challenger event in Mallorca, he was causing problems for world No 5 Dominic Thiem in the China Open. He lost but the signs point to another run to the top end of the game.
TAMMY ABRAHAM
A FIRST Champions League goal on his birthday and a call-up to the England squad. Funny what can happen when young players are given the opportunity to play. Plenty of good can come out of Chelsea’s transfer ban.
NOT IAAF
HOWEVER Seb Coe tries to justify it, and he has tried very hard, taking the World Athletics Championships to Doha was a dough-headed idea. Runner collapsing in the marathon, tiny crowds on most nights and a staging too late in the year. At a time when the sport needs to sell itself, it sold out instead.
THE HUNDRED
NOTHING screams quality quite like a group of cricketers dressed like crisp packets. Anti-obesity campaigners have had their say on the messages that gives out to children but the sponsors seem to be taking a punt on the public showing mass interest in yet another form of the game.
EVANDER HOLYFIELD
ANOTHER old man of the ring has come out of retirement for another go. At 56, this is as ludicrous as the recent decision by Nigel Benn to end his 23-year retirement. It’s been eight years since Holyfield fought but, as a living legend of the sport, he has nothing to prove and a lot to lose.
