Storm warning over Bercow’s TV chat show
SpeakeR John Bercow — who was implausibly floated at the weekend as a potential caretaker prime Minister — has long since given up any pretence of the impartiality on Brexit that his office demands.
His critics will now be even more infuriated by Bercow’s planned appearance on a TV chat show in ireland just days before the crucial eU summit on October 1718, when Boris hopes to get his latest Brexit proposal agreed.
Bercow is to be a guest on Friday on RTe’s The Late Late Show, one of the longest-running latenight talk shows on TV.
He astonished Mps last month by staging an impromptu press conference on College Green in Westminster after the Supreme Court ruling on the prorogation of parliament — but this appearance on the irish chat show at such a crucial time will be seen as even more inflammatory.
For Bercow will surely insist the vote by Mps taking a no- deal Brexit off the table is legally binding — and Johnson is bluffing when he says he can take us out.
The interview will be a gift for irish prime Minister Leo Varadkar Inflammatory: John Bercow who has rejected the new Johnson Brexit deal as unworkable.
One senior Government source said: ‘Bercow will have calculated that going on that programme will weaken our negotiating position. He’s a disgrace.’
One of the vice presidents of the european parliament, Heidi Hautala, was quick to dismiss the Johnson Brexit deal.
The Finnish Green Mep said: ‘it’s no good. it’s not a very serious proposal.’ asked by iain dale on LBC if she had read the prime Minister’s offer to the european Commission, she replied: ‘err, no. But i am more or less aware of the proposals.’
Clearly not a very serious parliamentarian, then.
