BRIDGE MASTERCLASS

- PETER DONOVAN

EITHER South or West will make 1Nt, dependent of the lead. COINCIDENTALLY, this deal arose at the table, just as i’ve been writing about defence and opening leads. it illustrates perfectly how the vital tempo gained from the opening lead can ensure defeating the contract. either South or West will probably play in 1nt, and neither should make it. When West or north start with a ‘fourth best’ lead (or even a passive MUd lead), the defence should come to seven tricks. the right opening lead can make all the difference.
