Above the law

-

THE Government has shown a worrying tendency to disregard the law, and there is talk of breaking the legal restrictions placed on a No Deal Brexit put in place by Parliament.

The idea that the Government is above the law runs contrary to the fundamental democracy and freedoms upon which this country is built. Not for nothing is westminster known as the mother of Parliaments. Dictators across the world will be watching with intense interest.

magna Carta was the result of a group of barons standing up to King John and establishing that no king (or government) is above the law. The last monarch who tried to challenge this, Charles I, was executed by Parliament. so seeking to subvert and destroy the hard-won freedoms of our democracy is a high-risk strategy.

It is increasingly apparent that the paper-thin pretext that Brexit is about asserting our sovereignty is simply a flimsy cover for currency speculators and those seeking to protect their off-shore riches.

These parasites will damage the rights of ordinary people. However, they need to be aware that wealth is guaranteed only by the rule of law. Governments that feel above the law get greedy. ANDREW MILROY, Trowbridge, Wilts.
