More than 20 killed in Japan typhoon trail of destruction

-

A TEAM of 100,000 rescuers worked through the night to reach people trapped after torrential rain in Japan caused landslides and flooding.

The trail of destruction was unleashed by Typhoon Hagibis, which has claimed more than 20 lives, local media reported.

As the storm moved off land yesterday, military and fire department helicopters saved survivors from roofs and balconies. But one rescue attempt ended in tragedy when a woman died after falling while being winched to safety in Iwaki City.

Rescuers in Kawagoe worked for hours to evacuate hundreds of people with boats from a flooded retirement home.

There was also travel chaos, with flights and train services halted. In Nagano, rows of bullet trains were submerged, causing millions of pounds in damage.
