VALLEYS DRAMA Stella, 9pm, Pick
RUTH JONES (pictured) is the force behind Sky’s series about a single mum fighting the tide in small-town Wales. It’s a nice mix of comedy and drama, and has that same kind of absurdist humour you find in Gavin & Stacey (which Jones co-wrote). In episode one, Stella (Jones) makes an unwelcome discovery about her kids.
HUMAN FLIGHT Own The Sky: Jet Pack Dreamers, 9pm, BBC4
THIS new documentary was filmed over ten years and chronicles the quest of David Mayman to fly a jet pack round the Statue of Liberty. It’s not just about the tech and David, though — who has a fear of heights — the underlying meat of this film is the impact his obsession has on his family.
RUSSIAN ROYALS Catherine The Great, 9pm, Sky Atlantic
SKY’S drama looks very grand, but it’s not the military manoeuvres or the lavish palaces that are important, but the details of the relationship between Catherine (Helen Mirren) and Potemkin — that’s the core of it all. Here, his domestic frustrations fuel Russian expansion in the Crimea.
CLUTTER COLLECTOR Hoarders, 9pm, Lifetime
PATRICIA is the mesmerising first subject as this real-life U.S. series returns for a new run. She’s an ex-ER nurse with three homes, all of which are packed with stuff — musical instruments, computers, vacuum cleaners, pool hoses. ‘I don’t really consider it hoarding,’ says Patricia, who sells some of it online — but only some.
FREEVIEW MOVIE The Handmaiden, 11pm, Film4
PARK CHAN-WOOK, who directed The Little Drummer Girl for the BBC, returns to his native South Korea for this adaptation of Sarah Waters’s novel Fingersmith. Senses and sexuality are intensely heightened in a seductive and lavish thriller, set in the Thirties, that’s strictly for grown-ups.
