Katherine stepped in to help elderly woman... and was mugged herself

- EXCLUSIVE Daily Mail Reporter

KATHERINE Jenkins was mugged by two teenage girls as she bravely tried to intervene in a robbery.

The singer stepped in to help an elderly woman who was being attacked in the street.

Miss Jenkins, 39, was on her way to perform at a carol service attended by Pippa Middleton when she spotted the pensioner being mugged on King’s Road in Chelsea, west London, on Wednesday afternoon. She then fell victim herself during the ‘extremely violent’ incident.

The Welsh mezzo-soprano looked close to tears as she waited for officers to arrive. She waved down a police van and was later able to help officers arrest the fleeing suspects. One was seen screaming as shocked Christmas shoppers watched.

Two 15-year- old girls were arrested on suspicion of robbery, the Metropolitan Police said.

Three officers led away one suspect wearing a hooded jumper and trainers, who appeared to be protesting. A second girl wearing glasses was also seen in handcuffs near the scene as police spoke to her by the entrance to a building.

One of the suspected attackers was then put in the back of a van, which drove off with its lights flashing. Scotland Yard told MailOnline that police were called at 3.10pm after a robbery was reported.

They confirmed a female member of the public had tried to intervene.

The force added that an officer was assaulted but did not require hospital treatment.

One of the suspects was re-arrested yesterday in connection with the same incident after further information emerged.

Miss Jenkins’s spokesman confirmed the mugging and said that the singer had seen the elderly woman being attacked and gone over to assist her, before falling victim herself.

It is not clear whether Miss Jenkins – who had her second child last year – went on to attend the service at nearby St Luke’s Church. It was organised by the Henry van Straubenzee Memorial Fund – set up shortly after the 18-year- old, who was a close friend of Princes William and Harry – died in a car crash in 2002.

The incident comes weeks after fashion designer to the royals Amanda Wakeley was mugged of her watch less than a mile away by axe-wielding moped raiders.

Thieves let the tyres of 57-yearold Miss Wakeley’s car down at Chelsea Harbour before riding up and threatening her with an axe on November 13.

Miss Jenkins is married to Andrew Levitas, 42. King’s Road became famous in the 1960s for being at the centre of London’s fashion scene. In recent years it has been associated with reality show Made In Chelsea.
