Why was TV’s The War Of The Worlds a flop?

-

THANK goodness for the Mail’s Christopher Stevens and his excellent critique of the BBC’s The War Of The Worlds. The producers should be ashamed of their treatment of this story, the wholesale changes to the characters and the pitiful representation of the Martian invaders. The cast could not have been more wooden in their woeful attempts to generate the fearsome atmosphere that the author, H. G. Wells, so brilliantly put into words. What arrogance to think viewers would put up with the rewriting of a classic and what a waste of TV licence-payers’ money.

R. MATTHEWS, Chesterfield, Derbys. WHAT utter drivel! The BBC turned The War Of The Worlds into a Left-wing, Liberal dig at British colonialism. A. COLLINS, Tamworth, Staffs.

I AM so angry to have wasted three valuable hours watching the awful The War Of The Worlds. A great book turned, at enormous expense, into a TV disaster.

RICHARD BRYANT, Cranleigh, Surrey.

THE BBC’s dramatisation of The War Of The Worlds was a party political broadcast on behalf of the politically correct, anti-colonial, Liberal Left. What a disappointment: unconvincing sets, gormless characters, a sloth-like pace, mildly menacing Martians and a love story without any chemistry.

ROGER SNOOK, West Kirby, Wirral.

SHOULD the BBC produce a second series of The War Of The Worlds, the Martians will not be killed by bacteria, they will die of boredom!

RICHARD SIROT, Deal, Kent.
