Facing police probe, Premier League star who smashed his £210k Lamborghini into a garden on Xmas Day... dressed as a snowman
AN ENGLAND footballer who crashed his Lamborghini while dressed as a snowman was lucky he did not kill anyone, a witness said yesterday.
West Ham forward Michail Antonio lost control of the £210,000 supercar in a residential London street at 6.30pm on Christmas Day.
The £70,000-a-week star, who hours earlier had posted a video online of him singing Walking In The Air from 1982 film The Snowman, demolished bin sheds and a tree in a front garden.
He was filmed climbing from the wrecked Lamborghini Huracan in his costume. Residents described hearing Antonio, 29, who was unhurt, arguing afterwards on his mobile phone.
One said the footballer claimed to have crashed because his snowman suit had slipped over his eyes. Police told Antonio at the scene there would be no further investigation of the incident, but now say they may reopen their inquiries after claims he had been driving ‘recklessly and dangerously’ seconds before his car left the road in Balham, south-west London.
Jane Wonham was at traffic lights at a crossroads in a 20mph zone as the Lamborghini sped past.
‘He came racing along the road and went straight through a red light,’ she said. ‘I would estimate he was going at around 50 to 60mph. He was going far too fast.’
Mrs Wonham, 68, added: ‘I have reported his driving to the police because he could have easily killed me or any of my three passengers if he had hit my car.
‘He was driving dangerously and recklessly and he should be
ashamed of himself. This is a quiet residential area and any number of people could have been out for a walk after enjoying their Christmas celebrations.’ Antonio’s car hit brick-built bin sheds at a large property that is
split into flats. Resident Nosheen Saher, 36, said: ‘ When I asked what had happened, he said his costume had fallen in front of his eyes and then he crashed. He was with a woman, I think it was his partner.’
Others said. from started crying ‘They Some the because pulled looked hugging same were up family like in they at each tears. the had thought party. other scene, all come They and she he had road his partner died. to where I and pointed he then was they across stood ran with over the to Another him and resident, started hugging Kia Oldfield, him.’ 20, told sports website The Athletic: ‘I heard this massive bang and the whole house shook. We thought the driver was going to be hurt really badly. My main concern was there was petrol and... a lot of smoke was coming from his car.’ Her mother said she heard Antonio
keep shout telling into me his I’m phone: stupid... ‘Don’t you should be asking if I’m all right.’ Antonio, who has twice been called up to England squads but is yet to win a cap, had put on the snowman suit after he finished training that day. The crash happened as he drove to his team’s hotel ahead of their game at Crystal Palace on Boxing Day afternoon, in which he played. When told that a witness had alleged that Antonio had been driving dangerously, the Metropolitan Police said: ‘Any new information will be obviously be assessed.’ Antonio’s representatives were contacted for comment.
