By George, it’s a bumper crop of coins for 2020
KING George III and the 75th anniversary of VE Day will be commemorated on coins released this year, the Royal Mint has revealed.
The annual set will also celebrate the 100th anniversary of Agatha Christie’s first novel and the 400th anniversary of the voyage of the Mayflower.
The athletes of Team GB will also be honoured with a special 50p piece ahead of the Tokyo Olympics this summer.
The reign of King George, who died 200 years ago in 1820, will be commemorated with a new £5 coin.
A special £2 coin marks the 75th anniversary of VE Day in May, depicting the celebrations that erupted following news of Germany’s surrender in 1945 and featuring the word ‘victory’.
A £2 coin complete with a handgun and a bottle of poison will be issued to commemorate the publication of Agatha Christie’s first novel, The Mysterious Affair At Styles, in 1920. Another £2 coin will mark the voyage of the Mayflower, which carried settlers from Plymouth to the New World in 1620.
Nicola Howell, of The Royal Mint, said the coin collection commemorates ‘a broad range of important historical events and people that have had a huge impact in how we live our lives today’.
