ON THE first day of each year, the bright and cheering NEW YEAR’S DAY CONCERT FROM VIENNA (RADIO 3, 10.15AM) is held at the Golden Hall of the Austrian capital’s Musikverein. Today, the Vienna Philharmonic, under the baton of Andris Nelsons, will be giving us a programme of waltzes, polkas and gallops by the Strauss family and other composers of that ilk. The whole thing goes along at a brisk pace, and ends with Josef Strauss’s Dynamiden waltz.
