What would Jesus do?

-

BRIDGeT ChAPMAN, of the Kent Refugee Network, is getting worked up about the Government’s policy of suggesting some illegal immigrants could be criminals (Mail). In a peculiar display of poor judgment, she suggests Jesus was a refugee.

This might be an attractive argument, but lacks any basis in fact. Mary and Joseph made a trip to Bethlehem to register in a census, which was not uncommon, and then returned home, where the Bible suggests Jesus had a typical life as the son of a carpenter.

They were perhaps the victim of market forces — too many people and too few rooms at the inn. But accommodation was made available, albeit hardly ideal.

DES MORGAN, Swindon, Wilts. IF We had been lucky enough for Jesus to land on these shores, it wouldn’t have been so that he could have claimed benefits, free housing or NhS treatment. It would have been to save our souls.

You can’t compare this to the actions of migrants who come here because they believe it is a land of milk and honey. Jesus only thought of us, not himself. CHRISTINE PICKERING,
