KNEE INJURY MAY RULE OUT CHAMBERS FOR THE SEASON

- By SAMI MOKBEL

ARSENAL fear that defender Calum Chambers will miss the rest of the season with a serious knee injury. Chambers limped off during Sunday’s 2-1 defeat by Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium and club medics were concerned by the results of initial tests. The 24-year-old had a series of tests on Monday and, as MailOnline revealed yesterday, there is growing anxiety that he has damaged his anterior cruciate ligament, though the club are still waiting for confirmation. Chambers has been a rare bright spot for Arsenal during a hugely disappointing season and his injury comes as a significant blow to new boss Mikel Arteta. The setback will see Arsenal ramp up their search for a new central defender when the transfer window opens today. Sportsmail revealed on Monday how Arsenal will provide Arteta with transfer funds this month to plug their leaky defence, with Red Bull Leipzig central defender Dayot Upamecano a target. Meanwhile, Inter Milan and Barcelona are showing interest in Arsenal’s top scorer Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. It is looking increasingly likely that the Gunners captain will leave in the summer, as he harbours concerns over the club’s ability to challenge for major trophies. Arsenal will not sell Aubameyang this month, but their hand could be forced at the end of the campaign when the striker — who has 13 Premier League goals this season — will enter the final year of his contract.
