... as host Walliams loses his trousers

IT was the most-watched show of the decade, but Gavin And Stacey will not be returning to our TV screens, it seems.

The comedy picked up the Impact Award at last night’s National Television Awards after 17.1million tuned in to the Christmas special.

But co-creator Ruth Jones revealed: ‘We don’t have any plans at all [for a new series]. That’s the truth.’

Despite a turbulent two years, Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly proved they are unstoppable, being crowned best presenters for the 19th consecutive year. The pair, both 44, also took the Bruce Forsyth Entertainment Award for I’m A Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here!

The win comes months after they were reunited on the jungle reality show following McPartlin’s drinkdriving conviction in April 2018.

Peaky Blinders scooped best drama while Cillian Murphy, who plays gang leader Tommy Shelby, won for best drama performance. The ceremony was hosted by David Walliams, who was himself named best TV judge for Britain’s Got Talent – an award he collected on stage without his trousers on. Tweeting his disapproval, Piers Morgan said Walliams was ‘annoying’ while other social media users branded him ‘not funny’.

Strictly Come Dancing took the Talent Show award and This Morning the Live Magazine award – with presenter Holly Willoughby doing her best to claim a prize for best dress in a sugar pink ballgown.

Gavin And Stacey star Joanna Page wore a black dress with emerald velvet neckline while Kate Garraway also opted for black. Presenter and Daily Mail columnist Susanna Reid dazzled in a chic red gown.

Strictly judge Motsi Mabuse, in a silver mini dress, and dancer sister Oti, in a shimmering emerald gown, beamed together on the red carpet.

Sir Michael Palin was the recipient of the Special Recognition awards.
