I’d given up on life until I got a puppy

- KEVIN DIMENT, Bournemouth, Dorset.

I FELT so sad to hear another former serviceman has taken his own life while suffering from PTSD. I hope my experience will give some hope to other sufferers. In 2014, after 27 years of service in the Defence Fire Service, I had to take voluntary early retirement. The Defence Fire Service of civilian personnel works for the MoD providing fire cover and prevention both here and overseas. I completed three six-month tours of duty overseas, two in Bosnia and one in Kosovo, and had to deal with severe incidents in which people died. I found myself questioning my actions and wondering that if I had done anything differently whether people may have survived. After I retired, I found myself feeling more and more depressed. My partner persuaded me to see a doctor, who was understanding and referred me to see a counsellor. I went for a course of six sessions of mindfulness therapy. However, I could not relate to it at all and became more depressed. Suicidal thoughts constantly plagued me and I would wander the streets late into the night not knowing where I was going or what I was going to do. My partner was concerned for me and in desperation suggested we get a dog. We found a breeder of miniature Schnauzers and after visiting decided to take home a puppy, whom we’ve called Sophie. She has been my salvation: affectionate, loyal and a bundle of fun. My life has totally changed. I look forward to every day and feel happier and more content with my life. I still get flashbacks, but they are getting fewer as the years pass. Getting a dog certainly worked for me and I would recommend it to anyone who is struggling with PTSD.
