Bongo busker accused of being selfish for ruining the peace at Glastonbury Tor
FOR years Glastonbury Tor has been a haven for druids, new age hippies and more orthodox visitors absorbing its spiritual delights.
But now the peace and tranquillity of the ancient landmark have been shattered by a ‘selfish’ bongo player, who is ruining the site’s ‘sacred silence’ with his nonstop drumming.
An angry note left pinned to a gate pleads with the busker to consider the feelings of visitors who want to enjoy the views in peace. The anonymous author says people are upset by the noise, which spoils their ‘wonderful opportunity’ to witness sunset atop the hill.
The note, written in black, blue and red ink, accuses the bongo player of having a big ego and wrecking the ‘ beautiful energies’ at the National Trust attraction in Somerset. It ends
by suggesting that the drummer, who has taken up residence at St Michael’s Tower on top of the hill, should play for just ten minutes at a time. The note was spotted by local Joe Smith, 30, who said: ‘We get all sorts up the tor and for the most part everyone gets along. But every now and then someone goes too far.
‘ This bongo menace has crossed the line. Everyone has a right to enjoy the sunset without some pretentious percussionist pounding away.’ The tor has evidence of an Iron Age settlement dating to 300BC. But it has also been linked to the myth of King Arthur and attracts new age visitors from around the world.
The note reads: ‘ To the Tor Tower Bongo player. Please be aware that others choose to be here at this special time. ‘This is a shared sacred place and space... yet you have very selfishly taken it over... ‘There are many that come here (long distances)... to feel... and be in its sacred silence... to feel the beautiful energies and peace at sunset.
‘You are very clearly and selfishly... not allowing others... this wonderful opportunity. There are many that walk away quite upset at this missed opportunity due to you. You claim to be attuned to this place... however... it’s probably just your ego if you “will not” consider others. Please allow silent spaces for others... say, 5- 10 mins on... 5-10 mins off. Together we can all then enjoy this beautiful place. Thank you.’
