THIS ITV drama from 1979 has weathered well. Anthony Andrews stars as an MG-driving, newly commissioned officer posted to a bomb disposal unit during the Blitz. It’s very much a ‘learning on the job’ situation, and there’s plenty of gallows humour as a result.

WHAT motivates a serial killer? This new series joins the dots to make it all sadly understandable, starting with Rose West. The re-enactments are like something from a horror film, and so much worse to watch when you remember that this actually happened. (Sky 156, Virgin 209)

SKY’S curious mishmash of a drama stars Harriet Walter (pictured with Frances O’Connor) as a cancersurviving widow who, after failing to kill herself, moves to Australia to be closer to her family. The script isn’t quite up to the challenge of such difficult subject matter, but there’s a lot of bravery in Walter’s performance.
