Give a gong to the great Greavsie!

-

I COULDN’T agree more with Sportsmail’s campaign to give Jimmy Greaves a gong. He is the greatest goal scorer English football has ever seen. I was 14 when I attended a photoshoot where Jimmy did his famous flying scissor kick. It was during the lunch break of pre-season training at Cheshunt and they were trying to replicate one of the three goals he had scored on his Spurs debut, which I was privileged to witness. I am pleased to say Jimmy signed the picture in my copy of Football Monthly. Former Tottenham player Cliff Jones described Jimmy as a natural goalscorer and remembers him playing against Leicester when he picked up the ball in his own half. He went past three defenders and the goalie to roll the ball into the back of the net. There was no ostentatious celebration like today’s players. Jimmy simply walked back, rubbing his hands together. I was at that game and I must tell you Maradona’s famous goal does not come close. Jimmy’s amazing dribble caused carnage to the Leicester defence.

PETER EVERETT, Warrington. I’VE fond memories of Jimmy Greaves. The first time I saw him he played for Chelsea and they won 5-0. Shortly after that he went to Italy, but he didn’t last long there — he probably didn’t like the gravy! He came to Spurs and his first game was at Plymouth Argyle reserves, where they put 10,000 on the gate and he scored a hat-trick. The rest is history. After a few years he went to

West Ham and Spurs got Martin Peters, so not a bad swap.

D. HARPER, Llandrindod Wells, Powys. I HAVE been a West Brom fan since the age of 11 and can remember seeing Greavsie at The Hawthorns, where he was brilliant. Arise, Sir James, you deserve it.

JOHN FORREST, Cardiff.

GREAVSIE is an all-time great. If Spurs had any heart, they would salute his genius by putting his statue outside their stadium. Almost 50 years after his retirement and still no English player in the top flight has approached his achievement. As Sportsmail eloquently put it: Give the man the honour he so richly deserves. And do it now.

MICHAEL BENSON, London SE25.
