Should people’s champ Jimmy Greaves get a gong?
I TOTALLY agree that Jimmy Greaves deserves the recognition of receiving a honour (Sportsmail). He played football as a gentleman and has conducted himself well in retirement, despite poor health.
RICHARD DICKENS, Orpington, Kent.
AS A long-time Chelsea supporter, the fact Jimmy hasn’t been honoured Greaves me, too.
VINCENT HEFTER, Richmond, Surrey.
JIMMY GREAVES’S goal-scoring record for England and the clubs he played for is an incredible feat that should be acknowledged. His TV career, during which he entertained millions, together with his struggles to overcome alcoholism are further reasons for an honour. For his achievements to have gone unrecognised for so long is a travesty that should be put right.
BOB LANDELLS, Barnet, Herts.
IN AN era of over-distributed gongs, I find it extraordinary that Jimmy Greaves has not received recognition.
J. H. PEARCE, Warwick.
JIMMY is my all-time favourite footballer. Defenders seemed to stand still while he was still moving. My best memory of him was when he scored five
against Wolves in a 6-2 victory in 1958. His sixth goal was, in my opinion, wrongly disallowed as offside.
ALAN GOVIER, Wickford, Essex.
AS A teenager, I used to go to White Hart Lane to watch my idols. Every time Jimmy Greaves was passed the ball, there was a tangible expectancy in the crowd that he would do something amazing and he never let us down. One evening 15 minutes before kick-off, the fog came down and the match was abandoned. Jimmy ran up and down the touchline, tackling imaginary opponents, to entertain the disappointed fans.
