WHAT TO WEAR THIS WEEKEND TIERED DRESSES

- By Dinah van Tulleken STYLE EDITOR

FORGET TRYING TO FLATTER YOUR FIGURE

Admit it, almost every time you get dressed you find yourself thinking: ‘does this lengthen my legs, trim my waist or flatter my bum?’ We’ve become obsessed with dressing to look taller, thinner, longer and leaner.

Well, it’s time to forget all that and have some fun. this season’s trend for tiers isn’t going to show off your shape, slim your waist or thin your thighs, and that’s exactly why i love it.

FRILLS SHRUG OFF THEIR GIRLY IMAGE

NecessArily, tiers involve an excess of fabric, so even if they don’t exaggerate and lengthen, they conceal very effectively.

And that extra cloth has another bonus: tiered designs, whether dress, top or skirt, have relaxed, wide silhouettes and are fabulously comfortable. you’re probably familiar with tiers on prairie dresses from last season, but this spring they’re different: less hippy and more hip. soft and unstructured, rather than girly frills, they are chic, sophisticated and grown-up.

LOOK FOR HIGH NECKS AND WIDE TIERS

if you like feminine floral prints, turn to Giambattista Valli for inspiration. chanel also produced floor-sweeping designs, while young British designer molly Goddard sent floods of tiers in vivid colours down the spring/summer 2020 runway.

on the High street, look for high necks with wide tiers, like the design i’m wearing here from Palones ( which looks very Alexander mcQueen). you could wear this to the office or to dinner. you’d look bold and fashionable without being over the top.

Whistles has plenty to choose from, including the fabulous midi skirt, below.

?? Dress, £210, palonesofficial.com; boots, £199, whistles.com ?? This look is eye-catching enough — keep accessories to a minimum and avoid layering. Block, bright colours are fun, but an understated black or navy-backed print makes the trend far more wearable. Unless you’re under the age of 16, avoid tiered mini skirts — a ra-ra is not the style you’re after. It lends itself to daywear but there are plenty of tiered designs for evening looks, too. .
