WOLVES FANS FACE EUROPA LOCK-OUT
WOLVES were last night awaiting confirmation from UEFA that their Europa League match at Olympiacos would be played behind closed doors because of the coronavirus. Nuno Espirito Santo’s men play in Athens on Thursday against the Greek side who eliminated Arsenal in the previous round. But owing to concerns over the Covid-19 outbreak, the Greek government has announced sporting events will take place without spectators. Wolves are awaiting clarification from UEFA so they can offer guidance to supporters planning to travel to Greece this week. As of last night, 66 cases of the virus had been identified in Greece. As revealed by
Sportsmail on Friday, the impact of the coronavirus on sporting events in the UK will become clearer today when representatives of major sporting bodies, including the FA, Premier League, RFU and the ECB, attend a meeting of the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport to discuss the logistical implications of limiting attendances to as few as 500 people. The FA and Premier League are both determined to fulfil their fixtures with as little disruption as possible but the implications of the crisis were underlined yesterday when Leeds United took the decision to take their academy and women’s sides away from the first team training ground. The England friendly against Italy at Wembley on March 27 is under threat with sources claiming it is inevitable the game will be called off. The friendly against Denmark four days later is also at risk. Players and security staff do not expect the game to go ahead. This month’s Bahrain Grand Prix will take place without spectators, Formula One organisers have announced. Bahrain has reported over 60 cases of the coronavirus.
