Nurse left in tears by empty shelves

- By Alex Ward and Liz Hull

A CRITICAL care nurse has issued a tearful warning to coronavirus panic buyers after she was unable to find fruit or vegetables in her local supermarket.

Dawn Bilbrough, 51, from York, was left distraught by shortages on the shelves following a 48-hour shift on Thursday.

Miss Bilbrough who was back at work yesterday as a locum nurse in Leeds, added she would be the one caring for panic buyers if they get the virus.

Her message comes as supermarkets introduced limits to ease the situation, with Tesco and Sainsbury’s restricting customers buying groceries to three per item. Mrs Bilbrough said: ‘So I’ve just come out the supermarket. There’s no fruit and veg and I had a little cry in there. I’m a critical care nurse and I’ve just finished 48 hours of work and I just wanted to get some stuff in for the next 48 hours.

‘I just don’t know how I’m supposed to stay healthy. Those people who are stripping the shelves need to stop it because it’s people like me that are going to be looking after you when you are at your lowest.’

After Miss Bilbrough’s video was shared on social media, she received many offers of help. Yesterday, Miss Bilbrough’s daughter Clare, 32, said: ‘My mum is working her hardest to look after everyone during this pandemic.

‘There’s enough to go around for all of us if we all act sensibly. Mum has managed to get the stuff she needs for the next few days now as I think friends have helped her out.

‘ But she never goes out and buys loads. When everyone is acting irresponsibly they need take a little thought for the people like my mum who have worked very long hours looking after others.’
