Should football stars take a pay cut?

-

AS A lifelong Spurs supporter, I am ashamed to be associated with a club that, in this desperate global situation, responds by taking much-needed Government money so it can offset its outgoings. It is the eighth richest football club in the world, with profits of over £100 million last year. The owners, manager and players should all take a pay cut to safeguard the jobs of everyone at Spurs and to help lower division players. Instead captain Harry Kane says the season should be null and void if things are not sorted by June so the club qualifies for the Champions League. Shame on these so-called sportsmen.

PETER WICKS, Warminster, Wilts.

HOW often have we heard players say: ‘It’s for the fans and everyone at the club, from the tea lady to the chairman.’ Now we know just how empty and meaningless those words are. What a bunch of selfish, self-serving money grabbers.

G. HATCHMAN, Cheshunt, Herts. I AM a staff nurse in critical care in a large teaching hospital. I have been qualified for 37 years and earn just over £15 an hour. I am furious that the tax I am paying on my meagre salary will be used to subsidise Premier League football clubs as some players continue to pocket more than £100,000 a week.

KAREN SOUTHERN, Sheffield. IF NOT all of the spoilt prima donnas of the football world take a salary cut, why can’t they each adopt a member of the non-playing staff and pay their wages? They wouldn’t miss this sum from their inflated salaries and the PR boost would be of benefit to a game that is out of step with the rest of the country. Why should our taxes prop up a multi-million-pound circus?

JANE JENNINGS, Dursley, Glos. HERE are a few tips for Premier League footballers who might be worried about how they will be able to survive with a wage cut. Trade in the Ferrari, Lamborghini or Bentley or all three. Sell a diamond ear stud or designer watch. Drink one less bottle of Cristal champagne a week.

STUART MILLER, Swanley, Kent.
