He rescues United after late double penalty drama
PAUL POGBA came off the bench to help rescue Manchester United at Spurs last night, spoiling old manager Jose Mourinho’s night.
Pogba, so often at odds with Mourinho when they were togather at Old Trafford, won the second-half penalty converted by Bruno Fernandes that cancelled out Steven Bergwijn’s 27th-minute goal. United had a second penalty overturned by VAR.
Yet their first-half display had been slammed by former skipper Roy Keane who delivered a brutal half-time assessment.
Keane said: ‘I’m shocked at that goal. I’ve watched a lot of football over the years, but to
give away that goal, I’m fuming here watching this game. ‘I can’t believe (Luke) Shaw heading the ball up in the air and then running forward. I am staggered at (Harry) Maguire. Staggered that an international player can just get done like this, and I am sick to death of this goalkeeper. ‘I would be fighting him at half-time, there is no getting away from that. I would be swinging punches at that guy. This is a standard save from an established international goalkeeper. I am flabbergasted. There’s got to be some stuff going on at half time, if I was Ole. Lads going through the motions.’ Keane had maybe forgotten de Gea’s outstanding display in the corresponding game last season, when he pulled off a string of memorable saves. United came out far stronger after the break though and were awarded a controversial penalty late on when Eric Dier was adjudged to have fouled Fernandes. This time though the decision was rightly overruled by VAR.
