DREAMING OF THE FUTURE

-

For those of us who love to cruise (and I count myself amongst them), these are not the easiest of times. The world has been faced with a global health crisis that has affected every setting where people come together and enjoy shared experiences, including restaurants, hotels, theatres and, yes, cruise ships as well. What is different about the cruise industry, however, is that no other sector, including airlines, has such stringent screening protocols or illness reporting requirements in place year in and year out outside a global crisis.

CLIA ocean-going cruise line members have effectively taken responsibility for protecting public health on cruise ships for more than 50 years. The health and safety of guests on board is of paramount importance. As we look to the future, cruise lines are now planning further enhanced health protocols and technologies informed by some of the world’s leading experts in science and medicine.

What can we expect will be different about cruise holidays? More robust screening protocols that go even further than other travel sectors, expanded stringent cleaning and sanitation practices, comprehensive shipboard prevention and response measures among others. And, like every form of travel, we should expect appropriate distancing measures.

What will remain the same? The safety, health, and well-being of passengers, and of the crew on board, who provide such excellent service, will remain at the heart of the cruise industry response.

If, like me, you are imagining where your future travels might take you, there are plenty of ideas to tempt you, when we are once again able to travel. Whether you prefer ocean adventures to far flung places, or meandering river trips through Europe, there is something for everyone.

Whichever cruise holiday is your cup of tea, I invite you to put the kettle on and happy dreaming! Andy Harmer SVP Membership & Director, Cruise Lines International Association UK & Ireland
