Doctors tell mum, 28, she has two – with a twin in each!
GIVING birth is rarely easy, no matter how joyful an occasion it is.
But Kelly Fairhust may have to go through labour twice – because she has two wombs, , with a twin in each.
She discovered during her 12- week scan that she has a rare condition called uterus didelphys, which means she has two uteruses s and two cervixes. It affects around d 3 per cent of women
Miss Fairhurst, 28, from Braintree, Essex, said doctors had told her that while the condition itself was rare, there was only a one-in50million chance of conceiving twins in each womb.
The mother of two – soon to be four – went with her boyfriend Joshua Boundy, 34, to Broomfield Hospital in Essex for the scan in May but he was not allowed to go in with her because of the pandemic.
He said that when she returned to the car park afterwards with news of her condition – and their twins – ‘it was a big shock’, adding: ‘It still has not sunk in.’
Miss Fairhurst said: ‘It was one of those moments where you laugh but in disbelief.’
The twins, who doctors believe may be identical, are due at the beginning of November.
But because Miss Fairhurst’s other two children were born prematurely, she expects they could arrive early in September.
She said doctors were planning to deliver the twins by caesarean but because of her history of quick births this may not be possible, meaning she could end up having to go through labour twice.
But she added: ‘I feel incredibly grateful that I am able to have two children and have the twins.’
Her eldest daughter Agyness, four, was born eight weeks early and her second, Margot, three, was six weeks premature.
Miss Fairhurst, a Tesco worker, said: ‘My eldest said that we would have two babies from the get-go. She was very impressed when we told them it was two babies.
‘We have a massive support group of friends and family – they are all incredibly excited.’
There is a history of twins in Miss
Fairhurst’s family and her grandmother was a triplet.
Earlier this year, a woman with two wombs gave birth to a boy after six miscarriages.
Nicola Guinness, 26, feared she would never have children after trying to conceive for eight years. But after womb surgery on the NHS she gave birth to baby Reggie on January 10.
