‘She panicked and screamed’

A JEALOUS ex-boyfriend who stabbed the pregnant mother of his unborn son to death visited the dying baby in hospital the next day, a court heard yesterday.

Aaron McKenzie, 26, knifed Kelly Mary Fauvrelle 21 times in a ‘vicious and cowardly attack’ as she lay in bed after he sneaked in through a set of patio doors while she was sleeping, a jury was told.

the victim, also 26, was eight months pregnant with their son riley, who was delivered by caesarean section at the house but died in hospital four days later. After carrying out the attack in the early hours of June 29 last year, McKenzie rode his motorcycle home before taking a twohour driving lesson at 8.30am, the Old Bailey was told.

Miss Fauvrelle, a royal Mail postwoman, had ended her relationship with him six months before her death and appeared to have become close to a colleague called rolander.

rolander was present when she discovered she was pregnant after she collapsed at work and was taken to hospital. McKenzie became jealous and sent her messages saying he was feeling ‘not needed’ and ‘unimportant’ in the months before her murder, the court heard.

in one, sent on February 11, he wrote: ‘i don’t know what to do any more. i really am breaking and my anxiety only makes it worse. i know i gotta be strong for you and our baby but i don’t know where to turn or what to do going forward. i really need your help through this please.’

But Miss Fauvrelle, from thornton heath, south London, said she no longer wanted to be with him and would not see him ‘unless it is about the baby’. She also suggested he seek professional help for his mental health.

On March 28, Miss Fauvrelle had told McKenzie’s mother Beverly that she ended their ‘toxic’ relationship in December 2018 but she would never deny him access to the baby, prosecutor Duncan penny Qc said.

Miss Fauvrelle’s sister, Melissa, broke down in court as she recalled the moment she found her sister covered in blood at the family home. ‘i heard screaming and i thought she was going into early labour,’ she told the jury.

‘i screamed i was coming and ran into her. i remember seeing my sister walking from the bed towards the door. She fell flat on her stomach and i remember thinking, “oh my god, the baby”.’

She said she phoned for an ambulance, telling the call handler she believed her sister was having a miscarriage. ‘ then i remember turning around to see the rest of the room and above the sofa i could see a splash of blood and i remember screaming down the phone that she had been murdered,’ she said. ‘her arm had been slashed and i heard my mum saying she was coughing up blood.

‘She was telling Kelly not to speak and then Kelly died in her arms.’

in the days after Miss Fauvrelle’s murder, McKenzie, who has Asperger’s, visited his son at St George’s hospital in tooting, Mr penny said.

‘Over the coming days he was to continue to masquerade in various ways as an innocent man to police, to the medical staff treating his son and to Kelly’s family,’ he said.

‘he had fled the scene and purported to carry on with his life as if nothing had happened, including even taking a driving lesson that morning.’

McKenzie was arrested on July 11 and continued to deny the attack, claiming he had been asleep at his mother’s house at the time.

But days later, he changed his statement and described riding his motorbike to his former lover’s house with knives in his backpack. his statement read: ‘i still do not know what i was planning to do.

‘Kelly woke up and saw someone standing over her. i do not know if she knew it was me. She panicked and screamed.

‘i panicked. i just thought, “i am here now, i have just got to finish it off.’

McKenzie, of peckham, south London, denies murdering Miss Fauvrelle, the manslaughter of his son riley and carrying a knife in public.

the trial continues.
