WHAT TO WEAR THIS WEEKEND

A SQUARE-NECK TOP

- by Camilla Ridley-Day

A TREND TO LAST

LIKE making sourdough, this is a trend that started in lockdown — but while I have a lot of bread flour left over, I still haven’t tired of the square-neck top. My husband calls it a ‘milkmaid’ look’ but I prefer to think of it as Marie Antoinette.

The shape feels strong and sharp and it’s a subtler, more stylish way to show off cleavage or a summer glow than a V-neck. It’s also ideal for updating your top half if you’re still in the home office, or smartening up a pair of jeans for a socially distanced BBQ.

AVOID THE CROPPED TOP

YOUR teenager might like the cropped-top versions flooding the High Street but for grown-ups there is a more sophisticated way to wear this look. Celebrities were obsessed with the square sweetheart neckline on Australian label realisation Par’s lace dress last year, then Bottega Veneta brought a smart black version to the catwalk for summer 2020.

Fashion shows as we know them may be on hold ( many were replaced by films for this month’s couture collections) but this look will let you summon up the insouciance of a catwalk model to strut, hand on hip, to the pub.

WEAR WITH ANYTHING

NORMALLY I’d give advice on how to wear this style but my favourite part about the trend is how easy it is pull off. Apart from avoiding said crop top, there are no restrictions. Wear it whenever you like, with anything from a pretty skirt to your favourite shorts — it’s that simple and versatile.

SNAP UP A SALE BARGAIN

WITH the sales now in full swing, there are plenty of bargains to be had. This ditsy floral & Other Stories version I’m wearing has pretty button detailing too, while M&S’s blue version (below) is made from linen to keep you cool.
