Police told to stop using ‘jihadi’ to describe attacks
POLICE have been asked to drop the terms ‘Islamist terrorism’ and ‘jihadis’ when describing attacks carried out by people who claim to be motivated by the Islamic faith.
The changes were proposed by a Muslim police association that claimed official use of the expressions gave rise to Islamophobia. alternative terms that have been suggested include ‘faith- claimed terrorism’, ‘terrorists abusing religious motivations’ and ‘adherents of Osama bin Laden’s ideology’, The Times reported. Police chiefs have stressed that there are currently no plans to alter the official terminology.
IF ANYTHING illustrates the Government’s abysmal failure to tackle the Channel migrants crisis, it is the extraordinary photograph on pages eight and nine.
A Home Office compound is a ‘ dinghy graveyard’, strewn with innumerable flimsy boats used by asylum-seekers making the perilous – and illegal – journey to Britain.
Home Secretary Priti Patel has vowed urgent action. But so far this year, 2,800 migrants have reached our shores.
Britain has paid France hundreds of millions to crack down on the peoplesmuggling racket. Yet its navy cynically persists in escorting boats into UK waters – washing their hands of the problem.
This only encourages more migrants to try their luck. Miss Patel must make clear that this complacency is not just unacceptable, it’s risking lives.
■ A SUCCESSFUL coronavirus vaccine is the key to returning to normality. So it is hugely promising that British scientists have created a jab that appears safe in human trials and triggers an immune response. It could still prove a damp squib. But if successful, inoculations could be ready for Christmas. Eradicating this disease would be a wonderful gift for the UK… and the entire world.
■ TO AVOID causing offence, police may drop the terms ‘Islamist’ and ‘jihadis’ when describing terror attacks by Muslims. Officers would, instead, use ‘adherents of Osama Bin Laden’s ideology’. This sanitisation is profoundly troubling. How long before ‘terrorist’ itself is verboten? If hand-wringing chief constables expended as much effort on tracking jihadists as they do on policing language, our streets would be infinitely safer!
