Chic to cheek ... it’s Kate’s corona cover-up
MOST would struggle to look elegant lugging boxes around in a mask and gloves. But the Duchess of Cambridge took it in her stride as she helped out yesterday at a baby bank for needy families.
Kate wore a white dress by British designer Suzannah Crabb with mock snakeskin heels – and even her floral print mask, which appeared to be a Liberty print, seemed stylish.
She was visiting a Baby Basics UK distribution centre in Sheffield, where she helped unpack boxes of donations.
Brands including Marks & Spencer, John Lewis, Sainsbury’s, Boden, and Bob & Blossom have donated items to Baby Basics and similar charities such as Little Village and AberNecessities.
Afterwards, Kate met one of the families that Baby Basics has helped.
Ali Wartty and Sahara Hamawady, both 47, said they have struggled financially, emotionally and practically with their oneyear-old triplets San, Shan and Laveen.
‘It must have been so stressful. Is the fact that someone talked to you and someone listened to you, is that what made the difference?’ Kate asked the couple, who are from Iraq.
‘Yes, it wasn’t just the practical help, it was having someone to reassure me and give me a chance to have five minutes to myself,’ Mrs Hamawady replied.
Kate revealed that she broke down on a visit to another Baby Basics operation, in Norfolk, at the start of lockdown.
‘I remember a couple of the families I met from King’s Lynn and I went home and literally burst into tears, their stories were so moving,’ she said.
‘The struggles they have gone through, the bravery they have shown... in extraordinary circumstances.’ The duchess talked about the impact of Covid. ‘It’s been wonderful during lockdown... the way everyone has been busy knitting away and actually it is those small volunteering acts that everyone can contribute to that make such a difference,’ she said. ‘Knowing that you can make such a big difference to another family is wonderful.’
