Hapless boyfriend’s candle proposal goes up in smoke

- By Alex Ward

IT WAS a heartwarming gesture designed to stoke up the flames of romance.

But Albert Ndreu’s marriage proposal went up in smoke when the 100 tea lights he spread on the floor of his flat to spell ‘Marry Marry Me?’ almost burnt it down.

The 26-year-old had left the home decorated with the e lit candles and 60 colourful balloons to meet his girlfriend Valerija Madevic, 22.

He wanted to bring her flowers, escort her home to a stunning surprise – and pop the question. But by the time they got ba back to the Sheffield flat a blaze w was raging inside. Unda Undaunted, Mr Ndreu still got down on one knee and asked Mis Miss Madevic to marry him – and she said yes with only the sound of a fire engine’s siren to provide mood music. He had spent two weeks meticulously planning the proposal. He said: ‘I was so nervous. I wanted to do something special. I bought the most important thing, which was the ring, and I just needed to make sure the day was perfect.

‘It didn’t go exactly as I thought it would but she said yes, so I think the day...ended up exactly how I wanted it to.’

Fire crews rushed to the scene to put out the blaze but the flat was badly damaged. Miss Madevic recalled the proposal: ‘He said that he messed up – our house was literally in flames – but asked me if I would marry him and I said “Yes”.’

Now the couple have moved in with relatives. Mr Ndreu said of their relationship: ‘We got on like a house on fire – but maybe we took that a bit too literally.’
