Britney Spears in court bid to seize back control of her life – from her own father
BRITNEY Spears has asked a court to stop her father having control over her life, career and cash.
Jamie Spears has been the singer’s legal ‘conservator’ for 12 years – overseeing her business and personal affairs since her infamous 2008 public meltdown.
Back then, she shaved her head in a late-night visit to a hair salon.
Worth an estimated £45million, the pop star – who shot to fame in 1999 with Baby One More Time – praises the conservatorship overall in court papers, saying it ‘rescued her from a collapse, exploitation by predatory individuals and financial ruin’.
But the mother of two wants to loosen those ties with her father. Mr Spears temporarily stepped down as conservator in 2019 citing health issues and was replaced by her manager, Jodi Montgomery, whom Miss
of her person,’ according to a paper filed by her lawyer Samuel Ingham to the Superior Court of California in Los Angeles.
Conservatorship is when a guardian is appointed to manage the life of someone unable to make decisions for themselves due to poor physical or mental health.
Mr Ingham suggests that a change to the role reflects her desire ‘not to perform at this time’.
It was first set up after Miss Spears’ conduct deteriorated following her divorce from Kevin Federline, during which she lost custody of Jayden, now 13, and Sean, 14. Another LA hearing is due on Wednesday.
This month, Jayden called his estranged grandfather a ‘pretty big d***’ and said his mother ‘might’ quit music altogether in a since-deleted Instagram post. The clip fuelled a #FreeBritney campaign by fans who believe the singer was forced into the court-enacted agreement.
