What a carry on! Did Boris bungle over baby sling?

- By Mario Ledwith

AS he poses alongside fiancee Carrie Symonds with baby son Wilfred strapped to his chest, Boris Johnson looks every inch the modern-day, hands-on father.

But parenting experts have suggested the Prime Minister may wish to take time out of his busy schedule to check the instructions on his baby sling.

The family photographs, put up on social media by Miss Symonds, were taken on the couple’s camping break in the Scottish Highlands with their rescue dog Dilyn last week.

They show the family enjoying the outdoors at the remote spot, and hiking along the rugged west coast – with Mr Johnson carrying his four-month-old son in a popular £155 Ergobaby carrier.

But the images triggered a debate among parents online, with many saying Wilfred was strapped too loosely and too low on Mr Johnson’s stomach, rather than higher on his chest, risking restricting his breathing.

And experts joined parents last night in questioning the positioning of the sling. Michelle McHale, of Attachment Parenting UK, said: ‘Boris appears to love wearing the sling and they could probably have an even more comfortable experience by following the guidelines. These recommend the baby’s head should be close enough to kiss and it looks like Wilfred is sitting a little too low.’

Sarah McMullen, of the National Childbirth Trust, added: ‘Your baby should be high enough so you can kiss the top of their head ... and their face in view.’

Mr Johnson, 56, and Miss Symonds, 32, rented a £1,700-a-week cottage on the Applecross peninsula and camped in a bell tent. Despite No 10 claims that Mr Johnson worked throughout, he was criticised for not interrupting the break to deal with the exam fiasco.
