Carbonara copy, Gordon?

Aussie chef claims Ramsay’s pub uses pork and pasta recipe he created

GORDON Ramsay is facing his own kitchen nightmare – after being accused of poaching a recipe.

Australian chef Mitch Orr claims a pork carbonara Ramsay posted pictures of online was a copy of one of his signature dishes.

Scottish-born Ramsay, pictured below, whose restaurants have won a total of 16 Michelin stars, shared a video on Instagram of a new pasta dish on the menu at his north London gastropub, the York & Albany.

He captioned the post: ‘Plating up Vietnamese braised pork carbonara... absolutely stunning.’ He topped the macaroni with a raw egg yolk – which caught the attention of Sydney restaurateur Orr, who commented on Ramsay’s post: ‘Looks familiar, mate.’

Orr later elaborated to a local TV channel, claiming Ramsay had copied one of the most popular dishes at his former Sydney restaurant, Acme – macaroni, pig’s head and egg yolk. Orr, whose recipe was inspired in part by a Filipino dish, sisig, which does not include pasta, said: ‘People don’t really own recipes, but it is standard etiquette to give credit where credit is due. ‘Gordon is one of the biggest chefs in the world with over nine million followers on social media – the right thing to do is to credit where the inspiration for the dish came from.’

He revealed that he contacted one of Ramsay’s chefs, Michael Dabbs, adding: ‘I haven’t heard anything from Gordon himself, but I have been in contact with [Dabbs] who agreed the [pasta] was too similar not to have given me credit for.’

Ramsay’s dish is available as a main on the ‘Love London’ menu at the York & Albany, where two courses cost £30. His representatives were contacted yesterday but declined to comment.

Last year Ramsay was accused of cultural appropriation over his new ‘fake Chinese’ Mayfair restaurant Lucky Cat. Food writer Angela Hiu alleged that there appeared to be no Asian chefs in the kitchen.
