MAGUIRE’S ENGLAND LIFT

- By SAMI MOKBEL

ENGLAND manager Gareth Southgate will dispatch No 2 Steve Holland to check on Harry Maguire today ahead of naming the Manchester United star in his squad next week. Midfielders Kalvin Phillips and James Maddison are on the England manager’s radar as Southgate finalises his squad for forthcoming games against Wales, Belgium and Denmark, to be named on Thursday. Maguire was controversially omitted from the previous squad after being found guilty of three separate offences during a holiday in Greece but is expected to be named in the squad. The defender successfully appealed for a re-trial which United insist effectively makes him an innocent man until the new case is concluded. Holland is due to be at the Amex Stadium today to watch Maguire take on Brighton, a game which also provides an opportunity to monitor young United striker Mason Greenwood. His place in the squad is under huge doubt after he was sent home from Iceland in disgrace for inviting two women back to the team hotel. Greenwood and Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden — both in the squad for the first time — were banished for the error in judgment and Southgate criticised the pair’s behaviour. It is understood they will not be picked for senior duty this time. Southgate will watch Sheffield United’s game against Leeds tomorrow, where Phillips will have a chance to impress again after making his debut in Denmark. The England boss will then watch

Manchester City v Leicester, where Maddison and City’s contingent will be monitored. Holland will attend Newcastle’s visit to Tottenham tomorrow then Fulham v Aston Villa on Monday. Southgate will be at Anfield that night for Liverpool-Arsenal.
