Have the right people received Honours?

-

THE Queen’s birthday honours have become a joke. Why should celebrities be given an honour? These awards should be limited to the unknowns of this country who do good rather than the likes of Joe Wicks and Mary Berry. What a shallow world we live in. M. RICHARDSON, Wakefield, W. Yorks. IT’S great to see NHS staff and other key workers getting the British empire medals they deserve. But why has cake-maker mary Berry been made a Dame?

RON JOHNSON, Old Windsor, Berks. WHY do some people get a gong just for doing their highly paid job? The real heroes are care workers and hospital staff.

COLIN BECK, Verwood, Dorset. THe Honours pander to the egos of a select few rather than capturing the hearts and minds of the public, and do little to create a sense of unity and that we really are all in this together.

DAVID HODGSON, Alloa, Clackmannanshire.

SIR Tommy Steele! Music to my ears. Gong but not forgotten.

DECIMA BARNES, Barnsley, S. Yorks. THe long overdue knighthood for Tommy Steele would have been even better if his fellow entertainers Jess Conrad, marty Wilde and Joe Brown had also been honoured.

TOM OLD, Felixstowe, Suffolk. FOOTBALLER Marcus Rashford, 22, has received the MBE for highlighting child food poverty. Jimmy Greaves, 80, has once again been overlooked in another round of knee-jerk Honours. I don’t begrudge Rashford his award, but those of us, like Greaves, who were born during World War II, find it hard to equate today’s definition of child poverty with those tough times. Greaves was a naturally gifted goal scorer who never forgot his roots. He was rightly proud of them. After defeating alcoholism, he showed others that addictions could be beaten. His self-deprecating humour on the TV show Saint And Greavsie with Ian St John endeared him to the public. I do hope the Mail’s campaign to see his achievements and the pleasure he gave to millions officially recognised with an honour eventually succeeds.

TONY CARMEDY, Navenby, Lincs.
