LILY: I MAKE MISTAKES ALL THE TIME

Days after THOSE photos with West, out comes a very awkward interview

ON reflection, she could probably have timed her lines a little less awkwardly.

For – days after her amorous display in Rome with married co- star Dominic West – an interview emerged in which Lily James confesses she ‘makes mistakes all the time’.

The 31- year- old actress also spoke of affairs and it being important for people to rebel.

The video interview with Harper’s Bazaar magazine, to promote her role in a new film version of Daphne du Maurier’s Rebecca, was recorded before she was photographed apparently canoodling with West in the Italian capital at the weekend.

Miss James and West had been filming scenes for the BBC’s adaptation of Nancy Mitford’s The Pursuit Of Love and are thought to have travelled to Rome together

A bit too honest? Lily James in the Harper’s Bazaar video to visit their agent and mutual friend Angharad Wood, who has just had a baby.

They set tongues wagging when they were seen riding a scooter together and being extremely affectionate at lunch, with West, who turns 51 today, stroking Miss James’s hair and appearing to kiss the side of her face.

Miss James told Harper’s Bazaar: ‘I feel I’ve rebelled in that way, I was always a rebellious teenager and I think it’s important to rebel all the time.

‘I think I make mistakes all the time, you know that’s what life is about and I would never want to run away from a situation or be too scared to act.

‘I think that it’s better to throw yourself in and make mistakes with an open heart. If your instincts are right, even if they’re misguided or if you’re open, you can recover from your mistakes and learn from them.’

Miss James plays Rebecca de Winter opposite Armie Hammer as Maxim in the Netflix film, released tomorrow.

She said she admired her character, who regularly cheated on her husband and had wild flings. ‘The character of Rebecca went against all norms as a woman and disobeyed her husband, had affairs, she was basically just brilliant,’ she said.

‘And that was only in the 1930s, so I think people are still afraid of women when they’re unleashed. Women are warriors and that’s intimidating.’ Miss James, who split from actor Matt Smith in December after a five-year relationship, said she has learnt to be stronger when criticised.

‘I think criticism can be good if it’s constructive but I feel like if it’s attacking you or a vendetta that’s really difficult,’ she added.

‘But I’m still learning, I’m still figuring it out but I do think I can grow and I do think I’m developing a thicker skin because all that matters is how you feel about yourself and how the people who you love feel about you.

‘That’s the truth, so you can arm yourself with that power and knowledge.’

On Tuesday West and his wife Catherine FitzGerald, who have four children, put on an awkward display of solidarity outside their Wiltshire home and insisted they were ‘very much still together’. They first dated as students in Dublin and married in 2010 after rekindling their romance.

Miss James is rumoured to have reassured Miss FitzGerald, a landscape gardener, that there is nothing going on between her and West, whom she starred opposite on stage in Othello in 2011.
