Quality Cheat... how Covid cut the choicest chocs

- By Helena Kelly

IT WAS the sparkling new sweet added to Quality Street tins last year.

But the Chocolate Caramel Brownie has gone missing – leaving sweet lovers feeling rather bitter.

manufacturer Nestle was forced to halt the production of the treat, pictured, when some factory workers were shielding at home in lockdown.

It was replaced with older classics – to the horror of some. matthew Tindle tweeted: ‘I’ve just emptied a box on the table for the kids to choose what they’d like.

‘Where are the Chocolate Caramel Brownies?! my eight-year- old son is devastated. explain yourselves.’ Another unhappy fan, Leah Shep, wrote: ‘Where oh where are the Chocolate Caramel Brownies? So disappointed.’ Julia macdonald added: ‘Please, please don’t disappoint your chocoholic fans like this.’ others pointed out that flavours including the Purple one were also in short supply. Quality Street said it had stopped making certain lines during lockdown in order to keep factory production going. There are typically 12 sweet varieties in a 650g tub, including the Caramel Swirl, Green Triangle and Coconut eclair.

The tins have evolved over the years, with Nestle ditching unpopular flavours and adding new ones.

Apologising for the disappointment, a spokesman said: ‘There is no change to the overall weight of our tubs, tins and cartons and any missing varieties, such as the Chocolate Caramel Brownie, have been replaced by another of our well-loved Quality Street selection.

‘We have been producing all 12 sweets again for some time now.’
