Saint-Max signs six-year Toon deal

- By CRAIG HOPE

NEWCASTLE UNITED have rewarded star player Allan Saint-Maximin with a bumper new six-year deal that puts him among the club’s highest earners. MailOnline broke the news yesterday morning that the winger was set to sign a new contract after he had demanded improved terms on the £45,000-a-week deal he agreed just 14 months ago. Saint-Maximin felt that did not reflect his worth to the team, who have won just once without him in 15 Premier League games since his £16.5million arrival from Nice. His new salary is in line with top earners such as Jamaal Lascelles and Jonjo Shelvey, who earn around £70k a week. There has been interest in the 23-year-old given his outstanding debut season in the Premier League and he has carried that form into this campaign. Manager Steve Bruce knows the importance of keeping him and said: ‘We’re delighted — and he’s delighted to be staying. He’s had an introduction now to what life in the Premier League is like and with Allan, the world is at his feet. He can go as far as he wants to go, because he’s got the talent to do it.’ Sportsmail first reported in July that Saint-Maximin was frustrated a new contract was not already on the table. But he said last night: ‘I’ve played for a lot of clubs — Monaco, Nice, in Germany, too — but at Newcastle, I feel like it’s my home. ‘The supporters give me a lot of love, the coach, too, and my partners on the pitch. When you have this, I feel it’s my home and I hope this stays my home for a long time.’ Meanwhile, goalkeeper Martin Dubravka has suffered a setback in his recovery from an ankle injury

and will be out until December.
