Choose an eco-friendly mask
WHETHER you are taking a bus bus, going to the airport, airport shopping, eating out, visiting a museum or just having your hair cut, a face mask is now mandatory for most of us. In fact, the Government recommends using one anywhere social distancing may be difficult and where you may be in contact with people you don’t normally meet. This is because Covid-19 usually spreads by droplets from coughs, sneezes and speaking. So masks are now commonplace in the UK — but there is increasing concern about the mountains of Covid waste that can be caused by disposable types. An alternative is a reusable, antibacterial mask made from soft, breathable fabric. This is a far more eco-friendly option, designed to be used again and again for up to a year, with filters that each give 40 hours of use. These have five layers to help protect against respiratory airborne particles. To use this type, you just insert the filter between the mask’s two layers of fabric, press the nose bridge to the shape of your nose and adjust the ear loops for a snug, comfortable fit. Used filters should be thrown away in general household waste and hands washed with soap and water or an alcoholbased hand gel. Filter packs can easily be re-ordered and a storage bag will help keep the mask safe and clean between uses.
It’s a good idea to clean the reusable mask and storage bag at least once a week by washing them at 40C using household laundry detergent. Dry the mask flat, or lightly tumble dry. The antibacterial fabric — impregnated with Sterileyes®, a biocide based on silver salt — will remain fresh and effective for the lifetime of the mask if washed weekly, but it is best to replace it after a year. Designed for the public, this type of mask doesn’t guarantee immunity against infectious diseases. But the antibacterial technology will reduce the bacterial load on the mask — while its reusable nature minimises the impact on the environment.
