CPS pursues Harry Dunn ‘killer’ even after ruling on immunity
THE alleged killer of Harry Dunn is still being pursued by the Crown Prosecution Service despite a High Court ruling that she has diplomatic immunity, the teenager’s parents have revealed.
Anne Sacoolas, 43, was charged 12 months ago with causing the 19-year-old motorcyclist’s death by dangerous driving, following a road crash outside a US military base in Northamptonshire in August last year.
But the US citizen was able to return home after her government asserted diplomatic immunity on her behalf. The US State Department refused to return her to the UK to face court.
The CPS said it believed diplomat’s wife Mrs Sacoolas did not have immunity at the time of the collision. Harry’s parents, Charlotte Charles and Tim Dunn,
‘Our pain is raw and real’
have been granted permission to appeal against the High Court ruling that she had immunity.
Janine Smith, chief crown prosecutor for the East Midlands, has written to Harry’s family saying she was ‘satisfied that there remains sufficient evidence for a realistic prospect of conviction’.
She added: ‘It remains in the public interest for the prosecution to continue.
‘The CPS remains of the view that Mrs Sacoolas should return to the UK to stand trial.
‘I do hope this confirmation is of some small comfort to Harry’s family and friends at this challenging time of the year.’
Mrs Charles said she was ‘really pleased’ with Miss Smith’s letter. ‘Our pain is raw and real, and we need to get this done sooner rather than later,’ she said.
